From Your Minister

It’s hard to believe that it was almost three months ago that I wrote the June Minister’s Message. In it I mentioned that it would be the last issue before the summer break and that things would start slowing down around the church for the summer months.

Well, here is an update on exactly how slow it’s been. We had a very well attended seniors’luncheon with many of our own seniors, and a few from the nearby community in attendance. At the end of June, we hosted a meeting of Halton Presbytery, as well as provided for the annual Halton Retirees Dinner. We hosted the Living Arts Center for two days with their “Artward Bound” program. Mardi and I hosted a four-week study group that was well attended. Almost everyone stuck around after the service on August 13th for the Congregational BBQ, for lots of food and good times. The Knitwits, the Victoria Club, and the coffee group continued their regular meetings. I may have forgotten a few things, and of course, we rounded out the summer with a successful two weeks of Vacation Bible School.

I think that maybe I should be writing that I’m looking forward to things slowing down in the fall! A big thank you to everyone who put in tremendous effort to make all the summer events the wonderful success that they were.

As always, please keep me informed of any upcoming meetings or events. And definitely let me know if anyone is in need of a visit or prayers. If you see me in the office, I’m always happy to chat. Yours in Christ, Rev. Brian Vickers

Sunday School

Welcome back to all our Sunday School friends. It is such a joy to welcome everyone back and for all those who had been with us during the Summer we want to express how happy we were to see you every Sunday. The S.S team will like to thank all the parents for their support in the past and we pray with God’s guidance we will have another year where we LEARN, PLAY,  PRAY and GROW IN JESUS.

The children continued to meet during the summer and we were involved in making crafts to go with our Bible stories. Approximately 15 children attended each week. We had hoped to have all the displays ready for an open house but due to construction and the need to reorganize we will have to push it back to later in the year.

The lesson plan for September will continue from the Deep Blue selection:

Sept 10: Hannah Prays and God Calls Samuel
Sept 17: Samuel Anoints Saul
Sept  4: Samuel Anoints David.

Continuing to volunteer with the Sunday School are Miss Zenny, Miss Raj, Josh, Alan, and Noel. Noel will be back with us this year sharing his time and talent. Curtis and Yvonne, who have been S.S. students from many years and are moving into high school, will be obtaining their volunteer hours by helping in the S.S.

We want to congratulate Josh and wish him all the best as he continues his education at Guelph University. Also, to all our S.S. students, we want to wish them a good school year as they move into new grades with new teachers and new friends. We pray that they will all have a successful year.

The S.S. will continue to serve lemonade on the lawn for the first couple Sundays in September to take advantage of the mild sunny mornings until we have to move inside for the hot tea and coffee. If there is anyone who would like to come down and help in the S.S. on a Sunday morning, please feel free to come and work with us.

Thank you, Diane Balliram

Quilting Group

This July we finished the “Celebrating
Canada’s 150th” quilt. With assistance from Mike Harris, the quilt was delivered to a refugee family in our neighbourhood and a very pleasant but brief visit followed. Please watch the Sunday bulletin for a notice about when the Quilting Group will resume meeting in the fall.

Doors Open

CUC is again participating in Doors Open Mississauga on September 23rd and we encourage everyone to invite their friends and family to visit our church and tour our facilities.

VBS & Summer Students

This Summer, we were again fortunate enough to be approved to hire students to work on some church projects and, most importantly, run and organize our Vacation Bible School. This year we had 20 students sign up for our 2-week program, including many of the children who attended last year. Special thanks to our students, Arlene Gali, Noel Shere, Olivia Smith and Elijah Bartlett-Springer for all your hard work!

Youth Group

On Saturday, September 30, 2017, the Youth Group will be doing community service in a whole new way. By hosting a Community Health Fair! We will have companies represented that offer/sell various products and services. We will also have fitness demonstrations on the lawn. This will be a free event and we hope that you will spread the word and come out with your families to take part in the festivities. Volunteers will be needed to make sure that things run smoothly. Please see Alicia Seifert if you are able to help out.

You may have noticed that our Library needs some TLC. Volunteers needed to do some clean up and get books sorted and shelved. Please speak to Alicia Seifert if interested.

Book Club

The next meeting will focus on “The Summer Before the War” by Helen Simonson. Join us on September 14th at 1:00pm in the Friendship Room.
